Why Us?

We don’t sanitize history. We make space for emotion, complexity, and truth. This isn’t only about facts and dates - it’s about reclaiming erased stories, honoring queer lives, and connecting with the city through a lens that is bold, critical, and unapologetically queer.

Created by two queer women - one Portuguese, one Brazilian - Queer Tour Madrid is rooted in lived experience, historical research, and a refusal to be silent. Our mission is to raise the questions that couldn’t be asked before. We walk through Madrid not just to show it, but to reclaim it through collective memory, resistance, and care.

OUR STORY

I’m Paulá, co-founder of Queer Tour Madrid with my wife, Leo. I’m a Brazilian immigrant from São Paulo with Northeastern roots, while Leonor is a Lisbon-born 'alfacinha.' Exploring the colonial history that connects us has shaped both our relationship and our work. It has taught us how to name power dynamics, speak openly about the legacy of colonization, and recognize how it continues to shape our daily lives.

Together, we research how the colonial past of Spain has shaped today’s ideas about gender and sexuality, and how they continue to perpetuate stereotypes and violence that remain embedded in the culture. With my background in psychology and Leonor’s deep connection to music and people, we create tours that are intimate, political, and rooted in care.

FAQ

1.Who are these tours for?

Our tours are for anyone, queer folks, allies, locals, and travelers who want to explore Madrid through a deeper, authentic lens. No academic background needed, just openness and curiosity.

2.Are your tours in English or Spanish?

All of our tours can be guided in either English or Spanish. We also offer private tours in Portuguese upon request, if booked in advance.

3.Do I need to be LGBTQ+ to join?

Not at all! We welcome everyone who wants to engage respectfully with queer history and community. This is a space for listening, learning, and connecting.

4.How long are the tours, and how much walking is involved?

Each tour lasts about 2.5 to 3.5 hours and includes moderate walking. We take breaks and move at a comfortable pace. Let us know in advance if you need accessibility support.

5.Will the nightlife tour include alcohol?

We do visit bars and cultural spaces, but drinking is entirely optional. Our experiences are not alcohol-focused, come for the stories, community, and music.

6.Are the tours child-friendly?

Our historical and museum tours can be adapted for younger audiences. Some topics are sensitive, so feel free to reach out, we’re an educational project and happy to adjust based on your needs.
